Jean-Christophe Amado: Risk Manager

Jean-Christophe Amado is an expert in climate risk assessment and management. Jean-Christophe is one of our key Project Managers working on strategic government and private sector projects. He recently led our a programme of work involving IBM and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), analysing the corporate risk assessment and management practices for listed energy, oil and gas and mining companies, as well as FTSE350 companies. He has led on the development of the Acclimatisation IndexTM, used for evaluating companies’ preparedness for the physical impacts of climate change.

Jean-Christophe also managed a strategic assessment of direct and indirect climate change risks for international financial institutions on behalf of a multilateral development bank. He is currently working with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to develop guidance and practical tools for integrating climate risk assessment and adaptation into the bank’s project cycle management. Jean-Christophe also intervened as a specialist climate risk adviser on various climate risk case studies commissioned by IFC in the energy, agro-business and transport sectors.

Jean-Christophe worked on an assignment for BG Group (a world-leading integrated natural gas company) which consisted of developing a climate change risk management framework to manage the climate change risks to the company’s extensive asset base. The step-by-step process was developed to be compatible with BG Group internal risk management processes. It guides the nominated lead of an asset or project through the stages of identifying key climate change risks, identifying control and management actions following a cost-benefit analysis, and deciding on implementation plans.

Jean-Christophe helped to coordinate the work of a working group on the role of the private sector in addressing the physical risks of climate change in developing countries (which included the UK Department for International Development, Barclays, HSBC, EBRD and Forum for the Future). As part of a team of climate risk experts, Jean-Christophe is also developing managerial and financial tools for assessing and managing climate risks.

Jean-Christophe’s previous experience includes working on climate change in partnership with the private, public and not-for-profit sectors in Europe and Southern Africa. Jean-Christophe led on a major research contract for the European Commission on the regulatory instruments of corporate social responsibility in Europe.

He has a postgraduate degree in ‘European law and policy’ (Rennes University) and a Master’s of Science in ‘Environmental Change and Management’ (University of Oxford). Jean-Christophe previously worked on various high-profile advisory projects, including a one-year European research contract on corporate social responsibility at the Perelman Centre for Legal Philosophy and a carbon assessment and management plan for Oriel College in Oxford.

Jean-Christophe will be joining our new branch company in Canada (Acclimatise North America) to develop our business operations in Canada and throughout North and South America.
