The ICMM recognises adaptation as an issue in its climate change policy
Published|02.12.09
The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) has recently published it climate change policy, recognising that climate change adaptation is an issue for its members. The Council is calling for “comprehensive and sustained global action…to reduce the scale of human-induced climate change and to adapt to its impact.”
The policy document states that “as major consumers and producers of energy, ICMM members have direct equity in a global policy approach to managing climate change that…promotes the development and dissemination of technologies that build the capacity to adapt to climate change, particularly in developing countries.”
ICMM also calls for its members to “contribute to the sustainable development of local communities and societies in adapting to the impacts of climate change” and that its members “consider it essential that governments and industries continue to co-operate in…building collaborative efforts both within and between countries to build the capacity to adapt to the impact of climate change.
The policy document can be downloaded from the ICMM website.
Acclimatise is currently producing the fourth and last in its series of Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) adaptation reports, sponsored by IBM. The final report examines the adaptation issues and best practices for the Global Mining sector and the report will be launched during January 2009. To learn more about IBM and the CDP please click here. The three reports to date, covering Electrical Utilities, Oil & Gas and the UK’s FTSE 350 are available to download from our reports page.
Also available from our website are a set of reports in the ‘Managing the Unavoidable’ series. The reports, produced by four leading UK institutional investors with specialist input from Acclimatise, argue that companies and their investors are failing to take climatic changes properly into account in their investment decisions. The reports call on investors to ensure that companies have clear strategies for responding to climate change and reporting on risk assessment processes. The reports can be accessed from our investors page.
