Project:Adapting to climate change: Lessons for London
Year:2006

Scope:

Acclimatise was commissioned by the GLA, on behalf of the London Climate Change Partnership (LCCP), to produce case studies of practical policies and measures adopted by world cities, which can help London to adapt to future climate change.

The project identified 18 cities that have progressive policies in place to manage climate risks in the following areas:

  • water resources
  • flooding: tidal, fluvial, pluvial (“flash”), groundwater, sewerage and combined
  • high temperatures.

It investigated a wide range of risk management policies and measures, including hard flood defence infrastructure, novel approaches to multi-functional land use, Heat Health Warning Systems and fiscal incentives to drive water efficiency in existing development.

Acclimatise was then commissioned to facilitate an ‘LCCP response’ to the measures being adopted in other world cities, resulting in a set of twelve recommendations for London.

The purpose of this project was to inform the formation of climate adaptation planning policies for London, especially the review of London’s key spatial planning strategy, the London Plan, and to contribute to the evidence base on planning of the London Climate Change Partnership (LCCP). The LCCP is using the report to ensure that London can learn from good practice in managing climate risks other world cities.

The project resulted in an agreed set of recommended adaptation measures from the LCCP, aimed at national, regional and local government departments and agencies, along with water companies and developers.
