Project:	Developing a climate adaptation strategy and adaptation action plans for the City of London

Scope:

The City of London needs to ensure that its services and infrastructure continue to function appropriately in the face of climate change, so that the city continues to thrive as a global centre of business activity. In 2006, Acclimatise was appointed by the City of London to develop an action-oriented climate adaptation strategy for the City, a project that made use of the UKCIP Risk, Uncertainty and Decision-Making Framework to identify the key climate risks and opportunities for the services and infrastructure managed by the City of London in consultation with City of London departments and other external stakeholders. On the basis of this exercise, ‘Rising to the Challenge: the City of London Climate Change Adaptation Strategy’ was drawn up, making the City of London the first local authority in the world to develop a climate change adaptation strategy.

In 2009, the City commissioned Acclimatise once more to develop a framework for the practical implementation of the adaptation actions required to address climate risks and take advantage of opportunities identified in the adaptation strategy. These adaptation action plans were developed in conjunction with some of the same departments that been consulted for the adaptation strategy and are organised thematically in order to efficiently deliver and monitor adaptation actions.

In addition to developing the Adaptation Action Plans, Acclimatise updated the City’s Adaptation Action Strategy to ensure that it accurately reflected the current situation in light of recent developments in UK climate science, projections and policy.
The City of London intends that its adaptation strategy will be a ‘model’ for other local authorities to emulate, befitting the world’s leading financial centre
