| Project: | The adaptation tipping-point: Are UK businesses climate-proof? |
| Year: | 2006 |
Scope:
The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) represents the world’s largest institutional investor collaboration on the business implications of climate change. The CDP process involves institutional investors who collectively sign a single global request for disclosure of information on greenhouse gas emissions from the FT500 largest companies globally.
Acclimatise and UKCIP jointly produced the UK country report for the 4th CDP information request. This report focuses on the current understanding by UK respondents of the FTSE100 and FTSE250 of the risks posed to their business by a changing climate, and the adaptation measures being implemented to safeguard assets and operations.
The report was launched at a press briefing in October 2006.
This ground-breaking work shows that climate risks are beginning to be considered seriously in the UK by a number of leading companies. However, although the potential direct impacts of extreme climatic events are generally recognised, there is less appreciation of the impacts, direct and indirect, arising from changes in average climatic conditions.
The work demonstrated that, despite increasing realisation of climate risks, the majority of FTSE350 companies are not treating climate change adaptation as a priority in their risk management strategies. Within sectors, however, there are some leading companies that have demonstrated an in-depth appreciation of climate risks, whereas others within the same sector do not appear to recognise that they face any climate risks at all.
